Orbit Chain, which facilitates cross-blockchain transactions, loses ~$81M after an attack on its cross-chain bridge protocol, reminiscent of Lazarus Group hacks
Orbit Chain's loss lands in a well-established bridge-security pattern: a 2022 analysis counted $2B stolen in 13 cross-chain bridge hacks, while earlier reporting put bridge-exploit losses above $1B over little more than a year. The reported Lazarus resemblance is a lead, not an attribution.
The comparison is consequential because U.S. authorities later attributed Harmony's 2022 bridge theft to Lazarus and APT38 in the FBI's Harmony attribution. Orbit Chain therefore revives both the technical risk of bridge custody and the difficulty of tracing cross-chain thefts.
First-order effects
Orbit Chain absorbs an approximately $81M protocol loss, immediately placing the security of assets routed through its cross-chain bridge under scrutiny.
Users and counterparties face heightened uncertainty over the bridge's safeguards and the handling or recoverability of the affected assets; Lazarus involvement remains unconfirmed.
Second-order effects
Other bridge operators face pressure to reassess the controls protecting cross-chain transfers, especially after a history in which bridges represented a large share of crypto thefts.
The incident strengthens the case for exchanges and other crypto intermediaries to monitor and freeze identifiable proceeds, as Binance and Huobi did with assets linked to the Harmony bridge theft.
Third-order effects
If repeat bridge losses persist, cross-chain liquidity may concentrate around protocols that can demonstrate stronger security and incident-response practices, raising the operating bar for smaller bridge providers.
The episode adds to the crypto legitimacy gap: recurring exploits can make security assurances, traceability and enforcement cooperation more central to adoption than interoperability alone.
The trend: Cross-chain interoperability is expanding crypto's utility while repeatedly concentrating security and custody risk in bridge infrastructure.
