U.S. prosecutors said on Friday they do not plan to proceed with a second trial against Sam Bankman-Fried, who was convicted …

🚨🚨🚨NEWS The federal government does NOT plan to go forward with the second trial of Sam Bankman-Fried in early 2024, according to a letter just filed with the court by prosecutors. Merry Christmas to SBF. Sentencing for him remains in March. [image]

Caroline Ellison testified in court that SBF authorized a $150m bribe to Chinese officials and that multiple Alameda employees were involved. Sounds like a pretty clear FCPA violation. *Someone* should probably be charged over it.

No consequences for the dark money influence campaign or bribing Chinese officials with $150m?

DAMIAN WILLIAMS, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. “The Government has concluded that the public interest in a prompt resolution of this matter outweighs the interest in holding a separate trial.” [image]

Crypto Crimes - and cover up? On SBF, just now DOJ wrote to Judge (6 pm on Fri Dec 29) “to provide notice to the Court and the defendant that it does not plan to proceed with a 2d trial” - dropping campaign finance and China bribe counts. Who took the money? [image]

Gotta love this arriving at 6pm on the Friday before New Year's Eve ... as if there weren't enough SBF conspiracy theories.

The upshot of all this: — There will be no second spectacle of Sam Bankman-Fried. No press horde. No costly, time-intensive trial. — SBF and his friends and family can “move on” until March — especially for those in the world of politics, who were concerned about a new trial.

BACKGROUND: Sam already had his trial a few months ago. He was found guilty on 7 charges. He was set to have an ADDITIONAL trial early next year for 5 NEW charges. They have now dropped that trial. They claim they will “consider those charges” during his sentencing in March 2024.

BREAKING: 🚨🚨 PROSECUTORS DROP ADDITIONAL FIVE CHARGES AGAINST SAM BANKMAN-FRIED TRIAL SET FOR 2024. THEY SAY THEY WILL “CONSIDER THE DROPPED CHARGES” DURING HIS SENTENCING IN MARCH 2024 [image]

They've provided a few reasons. There have been delays from The Bahamas, but also: they've already proven the relevant conduct, which all can be considered at sentencing, and the additional charges wouldn't change the sentencing guideline range.

That said, I think this is a miscarriage of justice. The public interest in a public airing of charges almost always matters. Campaign finance charges are at the very top of this list. What politicians and others knew what and when are critical questions that deserve answers.

Sad news for me and my curiosity, but seems like a reasonable choice as far as trying to conserve government resources.

incredible. he's going to get away with it [image]

This is INFURIATING! They are both trying to protect the ETFs, all the NEW crypto old money participants, AND, they don't want anyone to dig into the CAMPAIGN FINANCING CHARGES and see how corrupt everything really is. ABSOLUTELY FARCICAL.
  • @bennetttomlin @bennetttomlin on x
Ugh, this was my fear when they broke it out. Same way they never bothered with prosecuting Ross for murder-for-hire they're never going to prosecute some of the more interesting SBF charges
  • @iampaulgrewal @iampaulgrewal on x
A few thoughts on the DOJ's decision not to pursue campaign finance charges against SBF. Tl;dr: I think it's a mistake. 🧵⬇️
  • @teddyschleifer Teddy Schleifer on x
The Feds argue that they have already proven that SBF made illegal political contributions — and that the judge can consider that at sentencing. “At trial, however, the Government offered evidence of the defendant's scheme to make unlawful campaign contributions, both as direct..…

The DOJ is not proceeding with its second trial against Sam Bankman-Fried including five additional charges, arguing that much of the evidence would be redundant and it wouldn't affect his sentencing [image]
  • @autismcapital @autismcapital on x
We don't know how much more evidence you need to see how broken and corrupt all the three letter gov agencies are. They drop the Sam trial, they're bleeding out FTX claimants, people with BTC/SOL/ETH/whatever are being paid back the value AT THE TIME OF BANKRUPTCY rather than...
