A Google Play Services update suggests Google's file-sharing feature Nearby Share could be rebranded to Quick Share, the name Samsung uses for a similar tool

- Nearby Share is Google's peer-to-peer file sharing service available on all Android devices with Google apps.

Android Authority Mishaal Rahman

Context & Ripple Effects

Nearby Share began as Google’s Android-wide answer to local device-to-device transfers and later extended to PCs through Nearby Share for Windows, making its name part of a broader cross-device experience.

Samsung had maintained Quick Share separately since its Galaxy launch. This update is an early signal of brand alignment that related coverage later describes as a merged Google-Samsung sharing experience.

First-order effects

  • The Play Services evidence signals that Google may replace the Nearby Share label across Android-facing surfaces with Samsung’s Quick Share name.
  • Google and Samsung gain a single public identity for closely related sharing functions, while users may encounter a changed name rather than a wholly new capability.

Second-order effects

  • A shared name reduces one source of confusion when Android users move between Samsung devices and other Google-enabled Android devices; app documentation and support materials would need to follow the terminology.
  • The existing Windows extension becomes more strategically important: a unified Android label can make local sharing easier to recognize across phones and PCs, following Google’s PC-to-Android transfer rollout.

Third-order effects

  • If the naming alignment is carried through consistently, Android file sharing shifts from parallel Google and Samsung feature identities toward a more coordinated platform layer.
  • The episode fits a wider competition around cross-device convenience, where a recognizable default sharing path can matter as much as the underlying transfer technology.

The trend: Android partners are consolidating overlapping device features into shared, cross-device experiences rather than asking users to navigate separate branded tools.

💦It seems like Google's renaming Nearby Share to... Quick Share, which is also the name for the Samsung's file sharing solution? uhhhhh Today I received a GMS update to the version 23.50.13 and, soon after that, the notification from the screenshot above. The update as well as...…

Interesting: It looks like Google might be rebranding Nearby Share to Quick Share. Quick Share is notably the name of Samsung's file sharing service on Galaxy devices. Are these two services going to be merged? More details in the article linked below👇 https://www.androidauthorit…

This is kinda interesting and questionable It's not the first time Samsung ditched Quick Share for Google Nearby Share (Galaxy Note20 series on One UI 2.5) and bring it back with next One UI update Samsung's Quick Share works almost flawless, Google Nearby Share works...decent

@MishaalRahman If Nearby Share really merges with Sumsung's Quick Share then wouldn't it make it cross compatible with Chinese “Mutual Transmission Alliance” protocols? Samsung is already part of it, then we may finally see standardization of Android wireless protocols. [image]

My macOS implementation keeps it current name, NearDrop, because I don't care about these stupid games googlers play to get promoted.

I'm not sure how I feel about this All the UI changes look just like Quickshare, but I hope we on Samsung's end don't get a worse experience or missing features This would be great if we still get our features, and nearby share just happens to be interoperable but we'll see

Will samsung be announcing some sort of merger at Unpacked. Google Messages as the primary messaging app for most Android users and now will there be 1 sharing service as well?
