Sources: Bungie's recent layoffs came alongside a scramble to avoid a total Sony takeover, which could happen if Bungie doesn't meet certain financial goals
The Destiny 2 and Marathon developer may not be able to cling to the last of its independence forever.
This report makes the autonomy retained by the Destiny 2 and Marathon studio look conditional rather than permanent. It matters because financial performance is now described as a test of how much operational independence Sony will continue to allow.
First-order effects
The layoffs reduce Bungie’s capacity and place employees and active development plans under immediate pressure to meet the financial goals tied to its governance.
Sony gains a clearer basis to intervene more directly if Bungie misses those targets; a full takeover remains a reported contingency, not an announced outcome.
Second-order effects
Bungie’s leadership has stronger incentives to concentrate resources on projects and spending that can demonstrate financial performance, potentially narrowing room for riskier development bets.
Sony can use the prospect of tighter control to align Bungie more closely with PlayStation priorities, while Marathon and Destiny 2 teams face greater scrutiny over delivery and returns.
Third-order effects
The episode points to a post-acquisition model in which a studio may retain a distinct identity only while it clears parent-company performance thresholds.
If this pattern persists, creative independence in large game-studio deals will increasingly function as a performance-based governance arrangement rather than a durable promise.
The trend: Game-industry acquisitions are shifting from hands-off ownership promises toward performance-linked control as parent companies demand clearer returns from live-service investments.

@jasonschreier @duckvalentine I feel like “even the most successful live-service games can't keep growing forever” is definitely true, but also, how the hell does Destiny grow when getting new players into the game is so nightmarishly convoluted?
a depressing read about the “soul-crushing” atmosphere inside Bungie at the moment. There are also fears of Sony taking full control over Bungie if the studio can't deliver on financial commitments 😬 https://www.ign.com/...
Yet again, another reminder that we can't talk about “Bungie” as a homogenous grouping anymore. There are the executives and the developers. That “Bungie Family” is clearly dead, publicly so, since the execs chose to lay off staff rather than dock a portion of their own pay.
“I'm angry. I'm upset. This isn't what I came here to do,” one person said. “It feels like many higher ups aren't listening to the data and are like, ‘We just need to win our fans back, they still like us.’ “No. They don't..” [image]
“If Bungie falls short of its revenue goals by too great an amount, Sony is allowed to dissolve the existing board and take full control of the company.”
Since the Bungie layoffs a month ago I've been talking with a number of the folks still at the company who all say morale has taken a nosedive. Benefits have been reduced or cut, DE&I clubs were hit hard, and leadership seems indifferent or even hostile. https://www.ign.com/...
Lots of sad and shocking details in this well-reported story about Bungie's latest cultural crisis by @duckvalentine. One theme behind this year's industry layoffs is that even the most successful live-service games can't keep growing forever https://www.ign.com/...
Bungie seems to be on the precipice of a h̵o̵s̵t̵i̵l̵e̵ ̵takeover by Sony. If they fail to meet targets, Sony will take over the board and run the company instead of Bungie. This is a must-read for Destiny fans. *Fixed it* https://www.ign.com/...
