Sunway’s announcement extends a domestic supercomputing lineage that previously put China at the top of the rankings through the Sunway TaihuLight system’s leading performance. It also provides context for the later reduction in public visibility around Chinese systems: researchers subsequently reported that Chinese scientists had pulled back from Top500 participation after sanctions.
