Google updates Google Meet to recognize gestures in meetings, including raising a hand to trigger the “Raise hand” button; the feature is off by default

Google had already positioned Meet as a Workspace surface for AI-assisted presentation and transcription tools, and later outlined planned Duet AI capabilities for notes, summaries, and attendance. Gesture input is a smaller, interface-level addition to that broader effort to reduce meeting-management friction.

The opt-in design makes this an incremental usability test rather than a default change. It also precedes mobile Companion Mode controls for reactions, hand raising, and captions, which extends participation controls beyond the main meeting screen.
