This finding extends a documented progression from photorealistic face synthesis to evidence that viewers may judge synthetic faces as more trustworthy than real ones: a 2022 experiment found GAN-generated faces could appear more trustworthy to participants. It also lands after commercial suppliers began offering realistic synthetic faces for advertising and app use, making perception rather than generation quality the key constraint.

The stronger result for white faces matters because it exposes how realism judgments can vary across demographic groups. That sits uneasily beside earlier evidence that facial-recognition systems had sharply uneven error rates across skin tone and gender.

  • Survey participants may be less able to use apparent photographic realism as a cue that a face depicts a real person, particularly for white faces.

The trend: This is one data point in the synthetic-supply paradox: as generated faces become more convincing and commercially usable, authenticity becomes a provenance and governance problem rather than a visual-quality problem.
