Qualcomm introduced Snapdragon Satellite as an Iridium-backed capability for phones using its Gen 2 platform and X70 modem, with availability targeted for the second half of 2023. The cancellation shows that that chip-level launch plan did not translate into sufficient handset-maker commitments.

The retreat lands alongside Samsung’s work on a standardized 5G non-terrestrial-network modem, underscoring that satellite messaging was becoming a platform-integration question rather than merely a modem feature.
