Smart-lock makers had already been pursuing software interoperability: Yale and Emtek previously added August software support without extra hardware in an early cross-platform lock integration. Aliro brings that interoperability effort into a standards process backed by the major mobile-platform vendors and lock suppliers.

The initiative also extends a familiar digital-key pattern from vehicles, where Apple and Samsung participated in an NFC digital-car-key standard. The important shift is applying a comparable model to residential access.
