OpenSea lays off ~50% of staff and is moving to “OpenSea 2.0”; after laying off 20% of its workforce in July 2022, the NFT marketplace said 230 staff remained

A company representative told Decrypt that approximately 50% of employees were impacted across the company.

1/9 OpenSea is making some big changes today to focus on the next version of our product.

5/9 So we took a step back and reimagined our operating culture, product, and tech from the ground up. And today, we're re-orienting the team around “OpenSea 2.0,” a big upgrade to our product - including the underlying technology, reliability, speed, quality, & experience.

We had to part ways with a large number of very talented people today at @opensea as we consolidated and flattened the organization with a focus on velocity. If you are looking for engineers of all disciplines, product managers, or designers, don't hesitate to DM me.

OpenSea used to make 1-5 million dollars every 24 hours off of NFT ROYALTIES. 2 years later and they are on their second round of layoffs and pretending that they are “upgrading” their product. Upgrading by firing everyone? Word.

An OpenSea Foundation may mean that there will finally be a token in the future. It is probably not too late. Traders are fickle and they will switch for a potential airdrop.

@theblockupdates I'm sorry to anyone impacted by the @OpenSea layoffs. But, I would be hard pressed to find a more entitled, less responsive group of people. Their CEO is hands on and hard at work, but his employees have had an entitlement mentality that has crushed the company. …

Tweets 4/9-6/9 of this thread make it sound like user feedback & need for innovation led to layoffs. I understand layoffs need to happen sometimes, and maybe here they did. But I got news for you — layoffs won't fix the underlying problem you outline. Only culture does.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Introducing OpenSea 2.0! - They fired everyone that was left at the company, after firing everyone else 9 months ago. - We are going to “change stuff”. - Zero indication of what will change. Incredible announcement.

One big change you could make would be to enforce creator royalties. We'd love to work with @opensea but we're not going to forego royalties (or work on tips) to do it. We will be launching @InviteToMystery on @ERC721_C. We hope OpenSea changes course, but if it doesn't, you...

@dfinzer @opensea This teases new products and culture but also announces mass layoffs sandwiched between that, which reminds me of how you first communicated the death of royalties in the most confusing way possible, so nobody actually knew what was going on. It would be awesome…

Despite news of OpenSea's mass layoffs Friday, broader NFT market sales actually jumped sharply in October. How much? Click below to read the full story: https://decrypt.co/...

Sad to hear the news about @opensea, but glad they are recognizing the need to lead—not follow—in the NFT space. They have an opportunity to define the retail collecting experience and get back to basics. Honor royalties. Respect creators. Ignore bright shiny objects. 🫡🫡🫡

How about instead of focusing on OpenSea 2.0 you hire enough people on the support team to solve the myriad of delistings we keep seeing in the space. These actions are irrevocably harming businesses. Trouble tickets go unanswered. When they do the answers are vague at best.... […

Alot of talk about OpenSea on the tl and many speculating that it will release a token as a hail mary. I don't think it will happen. Just looking at the last couple weeks it's starting to print $$$ again. Just off BAYC alone it's making millions. Its overhead likely way down too.

6/9 We're building a new foundation so we can innovate faster and we'll have some experiences to share with you soon. We will change how we operate - shifting to a smaller team with a direct connection to users. So today, we're saying goodbye to a number of OpenSea teammates.
