Google completes its switch to mobile-first indexing of Search, a process the company began in November 2016, and plans to reduce its legacy desktop crawler use

Google’s mobile-first approach moved from a planned separate mobile index in 2016 to more than half of globally shown pages by late 2018. By 2020, Google said 70% of sites in its results had shifted and set an all-sites transition target, documented in its 2020 all-sites mobile-first rollout plan.

This completion closes a long migration rather than introducing a new ranking system. It matters because Google can now further retire desktop-oriented crawling assumptions that persisted while the web’s mobile and desktop versions were being reconciled.
