BlockFi says the lending platform has emerged from bankruptcy and begun the process of repaying its creditors according to the terms of its bankruptcy plan

Fallen crypto lending firm BlockFi announced on Tuesday that it has “emerged” from bankruptcy, making its bankruptcy recovery plan effective as of October 24.

Decrypt Andrew Throuvalas

Context & Ripple Effects

BlockFi's restructuring followed its November 2022 Chapter 11 filing, after withdrawals were paused and the lender’s exposure to FTX and Alameda became central to the case. Its earlier plan to reopen withdrawals through the bankruptcy process made creditor access a key test of the reorganization.

The plan’s effectiveness moves BlockFi from court-supervised restructuring toward execution. Related coverage later shows the company using Coinbase for client withdrawals while winding down its own web platform, underscoring that recovery does not imply a return to its former operating model.

First-order effects

  • BlockFi can begin distributions to creditors under its confirmed bankruptcy plan, replacing the prior freeze and claims process with repayment execution.
  • Customers and other creditors gain a defined path to recover assets, while BlockFi shifts its remaining work toward administering the plan rather than operating a lending platform.

Second-order effects

  • The pace and mechanics of distributions will make custodial and withdrawal partners more important to affected clients, particularly as BlockFi transitions away from its own platform.
  • The outcome increases scrutiny of counterparty concentration in crypto lending: BlockFi’s earlier bankruptcy was tied to exposure involving FTX and Alameda, so surviving lenders face pressure to demonstrate clearer liquidity and credit-risk controls.

Third-order effects

  • If similar cases continue to resolve through wind-downs rather than relaunches, crypto lending may become a smaller, more risk-managed segment centered on custody, collateral controls, and transparent counterparty exposure.
  • Bankruptcy recoveries can establish an operational precedent for failed crypto platforms, but the ultimate confidence effect remains contingent on how reliably creditors receive and can access distributions.

The trend: Crypto’s post-failure cleanup is shifting from emergency withdrawal freezes and insolvency filings toward creditor recovery and the orderly retirement of failed platforms.

BlockFi is pleased to announce that its bankruptcy plan (the “Plan") is effective and the company has emerged from bankruptcy as of October 24, 2023 (the “Effective Date").

My only guess as to how BlockFi could emerge from bankruptcy is the appreciation of GBTC and ETHE So they own shares and owe their customers actual coins Conversion -> redeem shares for coins -> return in kind? Any insights?

Selfishly wondering if my BTC that was locked in Blockfi will have appreciated or if it will be returned based on its USD value when they declared bankruptcy? I mean, glad to get anything back, but also curious.🤷🏼‍♂️
