Chrome had already been moving toward limiting cross-site identification, including anti-fingerprinting measures and explicit cross-site cookie opt-ins. IP Protection extends that privacy work to a network-level identifier rather than cookies or browser-exposed signals.

The proposal also sits alongside Chrome’s later Tracking Protection test for third-party-cookie blocking, making clear that IP-address handling is a complementary part of the browser’s wider tracking-controls program.

  • Chrome users who opt in will have IP addresses masked for qualifying traffic through proxy servers, reducing direct IP visibility for those requests.
  • Sites and ad-tech systems receiving protected requests will lose some IP-derived signals used for location inference, frequency controls, and traffic assessment.
