Uniswap plans to start implementing a 0.15% fee for certain crypto trades on its web app and wallet from October 17, generating an estimated $1M per day in fees
- Uniswap will add a new fee starting on Oct. 17 for certain swaps on its web interface and wallet.

Context & Ripple Effects
Uniswap had built scale as the largest DEX by trading volume, while Uniswap Labs had broadened its product reach through a $165M Series B and a marketplace-aggregation launch. A charge applied at the web-app and wallet layer is therefore a monetization move around access to a widely used trading protocol, rather than a stated change to the protocol itself.
The later Unichain Layer 2 launch extends that same arc of controlling more of the user transaction experience, from discovery and routing to execution infrastructure.
First-order effects
Users making covered swaps through Uniswap’s web app or wallet face a 0.15% charge, while Uniswap gains a new fee stream estimated at roughly $1 million a day.
The change distinguishes the economics of Uniswap Labs’ owned interfaces from the underlying exchange access available through other routes.
Second-order effects
Wallets and alternative frontends can compete more directly on total trading cost for users whose swaps are covered by the fee, putting pressure on Uniswap to justify the convenience and liquidity of its interface.
A recurring interface fee gives Uniswap Labs more financial incentive to prioritize product features and distribution that keep trading activity within its own app and wallet.
Third-order effects
If interface fees become durable, decentralized trading may increasingly separate open liquidity infrastructure from paid, branded user-access layers—a version of Uniswap Labs’ broader product expansion applied to transaction flow.
That separation could make DEX competition less about protocol access alone and more about who owns the trader relationship, though the fee’s persistence depends on users’ willingness to stay on Uniswap’s interfaces.
The trend: DeFi companies are testing whether open trading protocols can support sustainable businesses through monetized interfaces and vertically integrated user experiences.
I work in crypto because of the immense positive impact I believe it can have on the world, removing gatekeepers and increasing access to value and ownership. I'm proud of the ways @Uniswap Labs has contributed to that effort and want to make sure we're creating sustainable...
Currently, about 35%-40% of the transaction volume in Uniswap is completed through front end, H/T @1kbeetlejuice. Ethereum Uniswap V3 in the past 24h is $810m, excluding major stablecoin pairs, which is $740m, the daily fees charged by V3 may be $388k-444k....
Can't believe people are mad because Uniswap Labs are putting a fee on the front-end. Protocol is open homies, plenty of ways to bypass this fee if you don't benefit from the UI. I didn't even realize this was what all the whining was about. Absurd.
“starting tomorrow we will charge a 0.15% swap fee - the first in Labs' history - on certain tokens in our web app and wallet” anyone know what tokens? edit: ETH, USDC, WETH, USDT, DAI, WBTC, agEUR, GUSD, LUSD, EUROC, XSGD these^
1/2 Revenue that would have been accrued so far by this fee seems lower than some people are reporting. Weekly average in 2023 is about $800k, or about $42M annualized (Ethereum only!). [image]
Sustainability is a big issue in crypto. You can't keep incentivizing multiple layers forever. That is a good step from Uniswap. Many good revenue models still need to be explored.
Interesting reactions to this. Uniswap frontend is turning on 15bp fees on certain pairs. Protocol itself still hasn't enabled a fee. Half of reactions seem to be positive, indicating sustainable development. Other half are negative, decrying UNI holders still have no fees.
Worried about the new interface fees on Uniswap? CoW Swap's solvers find the best rates available in DeFi, and they don't pay frontend fees. So if the best price is on Uniswap, we'll give you that price. But if the best price is now available somewhere else ... we got you.
