Caroline Ellison's well-prepared testimony painted Sam Bankman-Fried as the ultimate decision-maker at FTX and a corrupting influence on his subordinates
- Government prosecutors completed their direct examination of former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison on Wednesday in the fraud trial of Sam Bankman-Fried.
The Block Zack Abrams
Context & Ripple Effects
Ellison's testimony builds on her earlier plea-hearing account that she and Bankman-Fried knowingly misled investors, lenders, and customers about Alameda's borrowing from FTX. The trial record now places that conduct within a management chain of command, following her account that Bankman-Fried directed the use of customer funds for Alameda obligations.
The immediate significance is evidentiary rather than dispositive: prosecutors are using the former Alameda CEO to connect alleged misuse of funds to FTX's top decision-maker, not merely to failures inside a nominally separate trading firm.
First-order effects
- The prosecution completes a central part of its case with testimony portraying Bankman-Fried as the person directing decisions spanning FTX and Alameda Research.
- Ellison's account puts FTX's internal separation from Alameda under direct scrutiny, because it describes instructions flowing from the exchange's leader to its affiliated trading firm.
Second-order effects
- The defense must counter not only allegations of misconduct but the credibility and detail of a cooperating executive's account of who held operational authority.
- The testimony increases the importance of records, communications, and witnesses that can either corroborate or challenge the claimed decision-making chain between FTX and Alameda.
Third-order effects
- If courts continue to treat affiliated crypto entities as operationally intertwined when leadership and funds overlap, formal corporate separation will offer less protection against accountability claims.
- The case points toward greater emphasis on demonstrable governance boundaries, independent controls, and clear custody practices at platforms that combine exchange and proprietary-trading functions.
The trend: The FTX prosecution is part of a broader shift from judging crypto failures as market losses to examining who controlled customer assets and affiliated entities in practice.

Even beyond the rampant fraud, this is a red flag: If the #2 thing a startup founder freaks out about is “bad PR” then you are simply ngmi You're supposed to be mission-driven, countercultural, defiant. Bad PR is a given! Turn it into fuel. Use it to rally your troops and...

Yes, SBF is at the defense table (2 US Marshals behind him) for all of it. He is also there after the jury leaves, and after the witness, like today with Caroline Ellison, leaves, and for his lawyers' arguments. His review of them to date, one can only imagine...

“[SBF] said he was a utilitarian,” Ellison said in court today, according to @crystalkimmm “The only rule that matters is maximizing utility. 'Don't lie' and 'Don't steal,' he said, don't fit into that framework.”

Hypothesis 1: sincere conviction in utilitarianism explains SBF's behavior Hypothesis 2: SBF's avowals of utilitarianism are a convenient fig leaf to excuse behavior before himself and others (These are compatible. To some degree, both are at play, I suspect)

Oh my god, the hedge that Sam thought would save Alameda, the one he was angry that Caroline did not do, was not a direct crypto hedge, but selling short S&P 500 Futures on the assumption they were correlated with crypto and would hedge their crypto-long position
