Memos: Blue Origin CEO Bob Smith is stepping down on December 4 and retiring on January 2, set to be replaced by Amazon SVP of Devices and Services Dave Limp

CNBC

Context & Ripple Effects

Dave Limp had already said he would leave Amazon’s Devices & Services organization later in 2023; this move gives that departure a defined next role through his planned exit from Amazon’s device division.

The succession also fits Jeff Bezos’s stated intention to devote time to Blue Origin after leaving Amazon’s CEO post, making the company’s top leadership transition consequential for a Bezos-backed priority he identified alongside his other long-term initiatives.

First-order effects

  • Bob Smith’s departure transfers Blue Origin’s day-to-day leadership to Limp, while Amazon must complete a separate succession for Devices & Services.
  • Limp brings senior operating experience from Amazon’s consumer-device organization into Blue Origin at the point of the CEO handoff.

Second-order effects

  • Blue Origin’s customers, partners, and employees will assess whether the new CEO preserves or changes the company’s operating priorities as Smith exits.
  • Amazon’s Devices & Services group faces added continuity pressure because Limp’s previously announced departure now culminates in a major external leadership move.

Third-order effects

  • The appointment points to a deeper leadership interchange between Amazon and Bezos-backed ventures, potentially concentrating managerial practices and networks across the two organizations.
  • If such transfers persist, executive succession at Amazon could become more consequential for adjacent Bezos-linked businesses, rather than being confined to Amazon’s own product lines.

The trend: This is part of a broader shift in which senior technology operators move from mature consumer-platform businesses into capital-intensive, founder-linked ventures.

Bezos in an email to the company notes “the significant growth and transformation we've experienced during his tenure.” Bezos said that Blue “has grown to several billion dollars in sales orders,” as well as from 850 people when Smith joined to more than 10,000 today.

“I'm deeply passionate about getting back to my childhood obsession: destroying the moon,” said Limp in a statement. I mean, that's why I'd want the job; is there a better reason?

He'll be replaced by Dave Limp, who “has extensive experience in the high-tech industry and growing highly complex organizations, including leading Amazon's Kuiper, Kindle, Alexa, Zoox, Fire TV, and many other businesses,” Blue said in a statement.

Glad BO is moving on from Bob Smith. I certainly don't want to count the new CEO out already but. The decisions we know of that Kuiper has made so far are like... bad. So I cannot exactly say I'm hopeful either.
