Magic Leap tells customers the Magic Leap 1 AR headset, which launched in August 2018, and its apps will “cease to function” from December 31, 2024

Magic Leap 1 AR headsets will “cease to function” from 31 December 2024, the company announced.  —  Magic Leap sent an email to all customers containing the following:

UploadVR David Heaney

Context & Ripple Effects

Magic Leap 1 began as the Creator Edition headset promised for 2018 and later shipped through an AT&T arrangement. The shutdown closes the operating life of that first-generation product rather than merely ending new sales.

It also follows Magic Leap’s 2020 wind-down of its consumer business and its subsequent funding for a second-generation headset, making the end-of-service notice a clear break with the company’s original consumer-device phase.

First-order effects

  • Magic Leap 1 owners will lose use of both their headsets and associated apps after December 31, 2024, requiring them to retire or replace deployed hardware.
  • Developers and organizations that still rely on Magic Leap 1 software must preserve needed work before the cutoff or move it to another platform.

Second-order effects

  • The cutoff concentrates any remaining Magic Leap development and customer support around newer products, rather than maintaining compatibility with the original device.
  • Enterprise AR buyers gain a concrete example of how a platform-level shutdown can turn otherwise functional hardware and software unusable, raising the importance of service-term and migration planning.

Third-order effects

  • If AR vendors continue to sunset early platforms outright, headset procurement will increasingly be evaluated as a managed platform commitment, not a one-time hardware purchase.
  • The pattern could favor vendors that make support lifecycles, software portability, and end-of-service transitions more explicit; the available coverage does not establish whether this will become an industry-wide norm.

The trend: Early AR hardware makers are narrowing support around newer, enterprise-oriented platforms as first-generation consumer devices reach end of life.

Magic Leap headsets will become expensive paper weights after December 31 2024.  Cloud services for Magic Leap 1 will no longer be available, core functionality will reach end-of-life and the Magic Leap 1 device and apps will cease to function.  An ignominious end to one of the m…

The milestone work achieved on the Magic Leap 1 will be lost forever. Tonandi, Undersea, Create, Dr. Grordborts. More importantly, the achievements and history we made will now be claimed by others. At least I still have my TRS-80.

Do not buy a AR/VR headset if this is the bar being set, where devices costing $2000+ have an end-of-life deadline. https://www.uploadvr.com/...

Pretty wild that Magic Leap 1's are getting bricked due to dropped support. Horrible design from a historical/archival view
