Nvidia reports Q2 revenue up 101% YoY to $13.51B, vs. $11.22B est., Data Center revenue up 171% YoY to $10.32B, and authorizes a $25B buyback

- Nvidia's performance was driven by its data center business, which includes the A100 and H100 AI chips that are needed to build and run artificial intelligence applications like ChatGPT.

CNBC Kif Leswing

Context & Ripple Effects

This quarter marks an early inflection in Nvidia’s AI-infrastructure arc: Data Center revenue surpassed $10 billion as A100 and H100 demand became the company’s principal growth engine. The subsequent Q3 acceleration in Data Center revenue to $14.51 billion shows that the demand surge persisted beyond a single quarter.

The result also established the financial base for a recurring capital-return pattern: later coverage records progressively larger repurchase authorizations alongside continued data-center expansion, including an additional $60 billion buyback approval in 2025.

First-order effects

  • Nvidia’s revenue beat and 171% Data Center growth validate immediate demand for its AI chips, strengthening the data-center business’s weight in the company’s results.
  • The $25 billion authorization gives Nvidia added capacity to return capital to shareholders while it generates cash from the AI-chip cycle.

Second-order effects

  • Cloud and AI-application builders reliant on A100 and H100 hardware face a supplier whose AI infrastructure business is rapidly gaining scale, increasing the importance of securing Nvidia capacity.
  • The scale of the revenue surprise raises the competitive bar for alternative AI-chip vendors: matching Nvidia requires not just comparable hardware, but the ability to serve expanding data-center deployments.

Third-order effects

  • If successive quarters sustain this pattern, AI spending will increasingly transmit through a concentrated infrastructure layer, with chip availability and platform ecosystems shaping the pace of downstream application deployment.
  • Large buybacks alongside fast-growing infrastructure revenue could reinforce a model in which leading AI suppliers fund both capacity investment and shareholder returns from the same demand cycle; its durability depends on continued customer build-out.

The trend: This is an early data point in the AI infrastructure supercycle, where demand for accelerated computing shifts revenue and strategic leverage toward data-center chip suppliers.

As predicted, $NVDA crushes it. Based on my CSP and OEM chacks, for the next few Q's, the company is only gated by its ability to produce enough generative AI optimized cards. https://www.cnbc.com/...

I am literally speechless. NVIDIA just grew data center sales 141% in a quarter. That's not compared against this quarter last year. That's literally growth in three months. $4.3B -> $10.3B That's... with the constraint of needing to ship physical hardware to customers. Nuts.

$13.5 billion Let's remember that *three months ago* they hiked guidance from $8B to $11B Their revenue *last quarter* was just $7.2 billion. So this company almost doubled in size...in 90 days' time. That's the AI boom. And with Chinese demand handicapped!! $NVDA

I'm an idiot, but when NVDA reported last Q, it was understandable there was a mad scramble into anything that could potentially be an AI winner. This time we've had a full cycle of companies reporting tho, so it's more clear who the immediate beneficiaries are: basically NVDA.
