Users of X Pro, previously TweetDeck, report encountering X Blue paywalls to use the service; X said on July 3 that “in 30 days” X Pro would be subscriber-only

X, the social network formally known as Twitter, appears to be finally following through on its promise to make TweetDeck a paid service.

The Verge Jay Peters

Context & Ripple Effects

The paywall follows X’s July notice that TweetDeck access would require Blue and its rebrand of TweetDeck as X Pro, turning a long-standing professional interface into a subscription benefit.

Later coverage shows this was the start of a moving access boundary: X Pro was subsequently restricted to the higher-priced Premium+ tier.

First-order effects

  • TweetDeck/X Pro users who rely on multi-column monitoring must subscribe to X Blue or lose access to the service.
  • X gains a concrete premium entitlement tied to a workflow tool, rather than to profile features alone.

Second-order effects

  • Professional users, publishers, and social-media managers must weigh a recurring X subscription against changing workflows or using other monitoring tools.
  • The move makes X’s paid tiers more dependent on access control: removing or repricing an included feature can directly alter the value perceived by existing subscribers.

Third-order effects

  • If X continues shifting core professional tools between subscription tiers, platform access—not only reach or verification—becomes a primary monetization lever.
  • That model can segment power users by willingness to pay, while making pricing changes and feature stability central to retention.

The trend: X is converting formerly open professional publishing and monitoring utilities into tiered subscription access.

Back when I was interviewing at Facebook years ago, I got an offer from Twitter to work on revamping TweetDeck.  The team seemed great, and as a long time Twitter user, the opportunity was exciting.  I chose a different path for a number of reasons, but I always thought TweetDeck…

If anyone at Meta is reading this, now would be a really good time to launch the web version of Threads! https://www.theverge.com/...

It's hard to see outside the news industry but Twitter breaking and soon Tweetdeck going away is driving almost every newsroom into an existential crisis of not knowing what to do without trending topics

Social media as expressed through Twitter has been the media's assignment editor for so long it's going to be great fun watching a lot of people re-learn how to find news without it

And, just like that, XPro (previously TweetDeck) is paid.  —  I personally think that this is the most compelling reason to pay $8.  The new version is slick.  —  But we're supposed to be complaining about X here, so I'll just say that this sucks and you should never take somethi…

Everything related to X now has the most generic possible name and no one would ever naturally connect any of these products/services to the site formerly known as Twitter.  —  It is the worst rebranding in the history of capitalism.  [embedded post]

RIP TweetDeck.  You were too good for this world.  [embedded post]

I love that part of Twitter's dysfunction under Elon is that all their products and features now sound like something Xbox would come up with.  [embedded post]

Well, there you have it.  —  BlueSky, Threads, Mastodon and the rest are about to get a surge in users now.  —  All because $ matters more than a brand.  —  Sickening...  [embedded post]

X has finally killed free access to tweetdeck It's now officially a Premium subscriber-only tool a sales page for X Premium now pops up when trying to lead Tweetdeck. bad news for social media managers, journalists, and power users

I'm not sure what could ever be “pro” about TweetDeck given what's (not) on twitter these days. Old Twitter had a lot of problems, but Elon's sure managed to stamp out any good they did have. I suppose this ends future Demetricator support for TweetDeck. https://www.theverge.com/…

Killing tweetdeck is probably the last straw for me. I'm honestly not even sure how you use this platform without it.
  • @brigidalverson @brigidalverson on x
Welp, I restarted my computer and now Tweetdeck has gone, unless I decide to pay for it. The new version is already terrible as it won't allow me to do the one thing I use it for: Managing several accounts in a single window. I don't respond well to extortion, and I ain't paying.
  • @nemof Nemo on x
tweetdeck legacy will not load User tweets if you click on a profile then click on tweets. Columns that are based on a given user will not load either. Others seem to be having the same issue. has API been turned off for some legacy endpoints? [image]

i'm sure i'll still be around on here, i can't help it but the entire reason i've stayed addicted to this platform over the years is having tweetdeck open behind my other apps all day and fuck me running if elon thinks i'm paying for the privilege
  • @lorengrush Loren Grush on x
Kicked out of Tweetdeck/X-Pro/whatever because I'm not a subscriber — this one stings the most
  • @samitsarkar Samit Sarkar on x
welp, so they finally got around to putting up the paywall for TweetDeck — I just tried to load it and was redirected to a sign-up page for Twitter Blue guess I'll just be looking at way fewer tweets! [image]
