Microsoft plans to sunset Games with Gold on September 1 and to replace Xbox Live Gold with Xbox Game Pass Core, which includes 25+ games, on September 14

Microsoft is launching a new Xbox Game Pass Core subscription to replace Xbox Live Gold.  This new Game Pass Core offering will include …

The Verge Tom Warren

Context & Ripple Effects

Microsoft had already begun turning Game Pass into a broad subscription layer: its 2017 launch offered a game catalog, and Game Pass Ultimate later folded Xbox Live Gold into a combined PC-and-console plan. This change extends that consolidation to the entry-level Xbox membership.

Replacing a rotating Games with Gold benefit with a standing Core catalog makes the lower tier more legible as part of the Game Pass family, rather than a separate online-services product.

First-order effects

  • Xbox Live Gold subscribers move toward Xbox Game Pass Core, while Games with Gold ends and Core launches with a catalog of more than 25 games.
  • Microsoft unifies the Gold name and benefits more closely with Game Pass, giving the Core tier a clearer catalog-based proposition.

Second-order effects

  • The change increases pressure on Xbox's subscription tiers to differentiate through catalog access, rather than through the older model of periodic game giveaways.
  • Publishers whose games appear in Core gain a route to Xbox subscribers, while Microsoft must maintain a sufficiently useful catalog to justify the replacement for Gold members.

Third-order effects

  • If Microsoft continues extending Game Pass benefits across tiers, Xbox membership is likely to be organized around an expanding service ladder rather than distinct online-access and game-library products.
  • That model makes ongoing catalog management central to the console business: the value of entry tiers depends on retained games and clear distinctions from higher subscriptions.

The trend: This is one step in Xbox's shift from standalone console-network memberships toward tiered, catalog-led gaming services.

@tomwarren So, if I pay more, I can't do online multiplayer?

Xbox Game Pass Core, replacing Xbox Live Gold in September, is $10/month or $60/year, no more “free” Games with Gold games added monthly, replaced with access to 25 Game Pass games (with more added over time) https://news.xbox.com/... [image]

@BriannaWu yeah it never made sense before and with the Game Pass naming attached it doesn't make sense now. It forces people into paying for Ultimate instead

obviously it's confusing to have Xbox Game Pass Core with online MP and Game Pass console without online MP. It's been this way for a long time, pushing people to Ultimate instead. I think the answer is Microsoft needs to add online MP to all Game Pass tiers
