Some Etsy sellers say the platform imposed a 45-day reserve on 75% of their income with no warning, as part of its Purchase Protection program to cover refunds

I've been selling over 10 years, 26,666 sales, 5 stars, no open cases, star seller, and I only have digital downloads on Etsy so there's nothing to ship and nothing overdue. They didn't notify me @tinywargames : If you are thinking of getting an #etsy account .!? And still in reserve for 90 days! #killingbusiness @Etsy beware the fees! And no money from sales for 90 days! [image]

Context & Ripple Effects

The 45-day reserves land on a seller base already primed for conflict. Over 14,000 sellers ran a week-long strike against Etsy's transaction-fee increase in 2022, and the platform has a track record of money-handling shocks: in 2019 it accidentally charged some accounts hundreds or thousands of dollars, and as recently as March it warned sellers that SVB's collapse was delaying payment processing — with one seller calling the disruption catastrophic for his business.

What makes this round different is that the withholding isn't framed as an error or an external shock but as a designed feature: Purchase Protection shifts refund coverage onto seller income via reserves. That sits inside a longer arc dating to activist-investor pressure to grow revenue and cut costs, which sellers have long read as the platform trading its ethical positioning for margin.

First-order effects

  • Affected sellers lose access to most of their working capital for 45 days — several are publicly reporting hundreds of pounds held during a cost-of-living squeeze, turning a cash-flow policy into an immediate solvency problem for small shops.
  • Etsy absorbs no new cash cost for refund coverage — the reserve mechanism funds Purchase Protection out of sellers' own float rather than the company's balance sheet.

Second-order effects

  • Seller organizing gets a fresh grievance with a concrete dollar figure attached, raising the odds of coordinated action comparable to the 2022 fee strike but this time aimed at payment terms rather than commission rates.
  • Trust-sensitive sellers face a pricing decision: either raise prices to buffer withheld income or diversify to other channels, thinning Etsy's supply of distinctive inventory that differentiates it from mass-market rivals.

Third-order effects

  • If reserves become standard practice, marketplace buyer-protection programs converge on a model where platforms underwrite consumer refunds with seller capital — making liquidity terms, not just fees, the core contested variable between platforms and their merchants.
  • Repeated unilateral changes to seller economics push regulation of marketplace payment practices toward the agenda, the way card-network interchange rules were eventually forced into the open.

The trend: Marketplaces are increasingly funding consumer-protection promises out of seller-held funds, converting merchant liquidity into the next battleground of platform power after commission rates.
