Sources: FTX abruptly halted the sale of its $500M stake in AI startup Anthropic; FTX's bankers had reportedly been shopping its Anthropic stake in early June

Bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX has abruptly halted the sale of one of its most sought-after assets: a stake in artificial intelligence startup Anthropic.

Bloomberg

Context & Ripple Effects

The pause put a bankruptcy estate's high-profile private-company holding on hold just as Anthropic was becoming a contested AI investment. The later record shows that the sale required a court-approved compromise with FTX customers before it could proceed.

The interruption was temporary rather than a permanent change in ownership: FTX later arranged sales to several buyers and ultimately completed the disposal of its remaining Anthropic shares. That sequence makes this early halt a useful marker of how difficult it can be to turn an illiquid AI stake into estate cash.

First-order effects

  • FTX retained the Anthropic position and delayed proceeds that could otherwise have been available to its bankruptcy estate.
  • Interested buyers lost an active route to acquire exposure to Anthropic, while Anthropic's capitalization table remained unchanged in the near term.

Second-order effects

  • Any eventual transaction would need to navigate estate governance and stakeholder objections, as reflected in the later compromise permitting the share sale, rather than simply clear at the highest available bid.
  • The pause concentrated buyer interest around a scarce secondary block; later deals involving multiple buyers show how such a holding can be distributed rather than transferred in one clean sale.

Third-order effects

  • As private AI companies become strategically valuable before public listing, secondary stakes are likely to function more like regulated, negotiated financial assets than freely tradable venture holdings.
  • Bankruptcies and other forced-sale situations can become an important source of price discovery and ownership turnover for illiquid AI equity, though outcomes will depend on court and company constraints.

The trend: This is one data point in the financialization of private AI equity, where scarce stakes draw institutional demand but remain constrained by governance, legal process, and issuer controls.

NEW: FTX is moving ahead with plans to restart its flagship crypto exchange, even as managers shed new light on the the theft of $9bn of customer funds. FTX likely to rebrand in connection w/the restart, and indications of interest are due this week. https://www.wsj.com/...

I still can't believe Sam Trabucco's name didn't appear in ANY of the SEC/CFTC/DOJ cases against FTX. Actually insane. At this point he might as well come back as FTX 2.0 CEO.

The lawsuit against Daniel Friedberg claims that he helped obscure the relationship between FTX and Alameda, drafted sham agreements to conceal the misuse of customer funds and used hush money to silence whistleblowers. https://unchainedcrypto.com/ ...
