Google shows AI features coming to Search, including an AI-powered “snapshot” that summarizes search results with links to sites “corroborating” the information

Google is moving slowly and carefully to make AI happen.  Maybe too slowly and too carefully for some people.

Google has unveiled its vision for how it will incorporate AI into search. The quick answer: it's going to gobble up the open web and then summarize/rewrite/regurgitate it (pick the adjective that reflects your level of disquiet) in a shiny google UI https://www.theverge.com/... …

Early takeaways from Google's new AI search updates, aka Project Magi 1. Most answers appear to NOT cite sources 2. LINKS to dig deeper appear below/offside 3. Emphasis on SHOPPING features 4. SEARCH ADS continue to appear 5. Like ChatGPT, you can “continue” conversations 🧵1/5 ht…

As Google and Microsoft restructure search around AI chatbots, I've been thinking a lot about the incentives to keep creating content for websites. Google has already observed that fewer websites are regularly updated. What's the point if this how your work will be presented? htt…

What excites me most is the capability of “corroborating” the information in the LLM-generated response. To evaluate the response quality, users can expand the view to see how the response is corroborated, and then click to the linked resources to go deeper. 4/

One thing this definitely kills is the easy-click stories like “what time is the Super Bowl” — which you may hate, but because they do viral traffic every time, pay the bills in many newsrooms. https://twitter.com/...
  • @alexarrelia Alex Arrelia on x
It's wild how this only doesn't constitute plagiarism or copyright violation by mere technicality. Like they can copyright strike you like the day is long on YouTube, but if you write on the internet for a living, your shit is just theirs now https://twitter.com/...
  • @parismarx Paris Marx on x
Google has been moving in this direction for years, and has faced pushback for things like featured snippets. The AI hype is allowing it to double down on its effort to make you spend more time on Google and less visiting the rest of the web. https://twitter.com/...

Those source links are going to be clicked on even less than Twitter links. This is a huge problem for publishers. https://twitter.com/...

what's the plan for when this utterly destroys any economic incentive for anyone to produce any new content about anything, except i guess for people who are deliberately producing misinformation for malicious ulterior purposes https://twitter.com/...

Search is still a monopoly. “After Microsoft added OpenAI's chatbot to its Bing search engine in February, it surged in traffic rankings. But it has now returned to last year's levels, according to global traffic data from Cisco Umbrella.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/ ...

If this happens Google ceases being a search engine and will start being a publishing platform. I do not know how one would search for information on the web that leads directly to the source material? https://twitter.com/...

i think it is bad for journalism to not have a thriving and expansive press beyond “top” outlets and the economics of the business and the direction tech platforms are going in have not made that future any brighter (that i can see thus far)

the fun thing is that even when this inevitably destroys the value of Google search, Google has immense power to keep users softlocked in via Android and Chrome (and is default on Apple/iOS too) https://twitter.com/...

This is a really important point: From a business perspective, the goal of a Google AI is to make sure you never view primary sources on other web pages, only the chopped-and-processed information on Google's own site. https://twitter.com/...

I have found the entire Google-is-falling-behind-in- AI narrative very stupid. Today's update at IO is Pichai flexing. Google will put productized generative AI across its entire ecosystem for billions of people for free this year. The bar for app layer startups just went up 10x.…

so in a world where search goes fully GenAI (which is still a big if), pages of links go away and you get a handful of citations i would imagine/guess this theoretically destroys small publisher traffic while rewarding the big outlets which may be weighted w/more authority https:…

Generative AI capabilities in Search are especially helpful when deciding what to buy. They tap into Google's Shopping Graph, the world's most comprehensive dataset of constantly-changing products, sellers, brands, reviews and inventory. #GoogleIO https://twitter.com/...

🔮 By 2028 most people will no longer use a search engine or a search bar. Your private and personal AI agent will assemble a response and use search when needed by sending agents to search engines. It was not clear to some in 2023 that the future is not like 2003. https://twitter…
