Binance launches Capital Connect to connect VIP clients and investment fund managers; the exchange has 128M+ users, of which VIPs are a “very small percentage”

Context & Ripple Effects
Capital Connect is the second act of Binance's institutional push. In mid-2022 the exchange built Binance Institutional to give VIP and institutional investors direct digital-asset trading, deliberately excluding its US affiliate's customers; the new product goes one layer up the stack by matchmaking those VIPs with external investment fund managers rather than only serving them trades.
It also rhymes with Binance's oldest institutional experiment — the $1B fund of funds announced in 2018 — but inverted: instead of deploying its own capital into blockchain firms, it now brokers relationships between its wealthiest users and outside managers. The stated math explains why: of 128M+ users, VIPs are 'a very small percentage,' so each VIP relationship carries outsized revenue weight, a concentration Richard Teng later underscored when he reported the base grew to 170M accounts in 2023 with retail products leading.
First-order effects
- VIP clients get a curated channel to fund managers inside their existing exchange account, and fund managers get direct distribution into the highest-value slice of Binance's user base without building their own client-acquisition funnel.
Second-order effects
- Competing exchanges face pressure to match the prime-brokerage-style layer — custody, trading, and now fund access bundled for whales — shifting competition for large accounts from fee schedules to service breadth.
Third-order effects
- If the pattern holds, major crypto exchanges keep accreting asset-management and advisory functions on top of trading, moving them toward full-stack financial platforms whose economics hinge on a thin VIP tier rather than mass retail volume.
The trend: Crypto exchanges are converting concentrated whale relationships into platform lock-in by adding matchmaking and fund-distribution services on top of core trading.
