Twitter increases the tweet length for Blue subscribers to 10,000 characters, up from the 4,000 set in February 2023, and adds bold and italic text formatting

We're making improvements to the writing and reading experience on Twitter! Starting today, Twitter now supports Tweets up to 10,000 characters in length, with bold and italic text formatting. Sign up for Twitter Blue to access these new features, and apply to enable... https://twitter.com/...

Context & Ripple Effects

Twitter had already made longer posts a Blue feature with its 4,000-character Blue limit, while keeping timeline previews short and expandable. This update pushes that same paid publishing tier much further rather than introducing a separate long-form product.

It also builds on Twitter’s earlier Notes experiment for rich long-form publishing, but folds more writing capability directly into the standard post format. That makes the distinction between ordinary posts and subscriber publishing tools more consequential.

First-order effects

  • Blue subscribers can publish posts up to 10,000 characters and use bold and italic formatting immediately; non-subscribers do not receive those capabilities.
  • Twitter strengthens Blue’s product differentiation by tying a more expressive writing format to the subscription.

Second-order effects

  • Long-form publishers can place more of an argument, update, or commentary in one native post instead of splitting it across threads or directing readers to another destination.
  • The expanded native format makes Twitter’s earlier standalone Notes-style approach less central as a way to support longer writing, while raising the value of Blue for users who publish frequently.

Third-order effects

  • If successive format upgrades remain subscription-gated, Twitter’s paid tier could evolve from an add-on into a capability layer that determines which users can use the platform’s fuller publishing tools.
  • The move points toward a platform where the structure and presentation of public discourse are increasingly shaped by paid product access, not only by ranking and moderation choices.

The trend: Twitter is turning premium access into a broader publishing toolkit, extending beyond account perks into the mechanics of how users create and present content.
