Currents was born as an enterprise salvage operation: after the consumer Google+ shutdown that followed the API bug disclosure, Google launched it in beta in 2019 as a private, paid replacement for G Suite customers (Currents launched in beta in 2019). Google then gave it a long runway, announcing the wind-down starting in 2023 back in February 2022 (wind-down announced in early 2022).
The August 8 cutoff is the end of that arc, and it fits a familiar Google Workspace playbook — the same one that retired classic Hangouts for G Suite customers in favor of Chat and Meet (classic Hangouts retirement) and later claimed the work-tracking tool Tables. Each sunset pushes customers off a standalone app and into features embedded in the core suite.
