Microsoft begins rolling out Bing Image Creator to Edge, powered by OpenAI's DALL-E and accessible via Bing Chat, letting users create images from text prompts

Microsoft today announced that its new AI-enabled Bing will now allow users to generate images with Bing Chat.

TechCrunch Frederic Lardinois

Context & Ripple Effects

Microsoft had already outlined plans to put DALL-E 2 into Designer, Bing and Edge; this rollout makes that planned image-generation integration a user-facing part of its search and browser experience.

It extends the AI-powered Bing and Edge launch from text answers into image creation. Later coverage of DALL-E 3 reaching Bing users shows the feature becoming a continuing distribution channel for newer OpenAI image models.

First-order effects

  • Bing Chat and Edge users can move from a text prompt to a generated image without leaving Microsoft's search-and-browser environment.
  • Microsoft gains a more visibly multimodal use case for Bing and Edge, while OpenAI's DALL-E is placed in front of that consumer audience.

Second-order effects

  • The addition raises the bar for search and browser assistants: rivals must compete not only on conversational answers but on integrated creation tools.
  • Keeping image generation inside Bing and Edge gives Microsoft another surface on which to layer related AI features, as it later did with AI-generated shopping guides in Bing.

Third-order effects

  • If such features remain embedded in everyday browsing, search products may increasingly compete as AI work surfaces rather than primarily as retrieval interfaces.
  • The pattern concentrates consumer access to generative models in a small number of platform-controlled entry points, making model partnerships and distribution more strategically linked.

The trend: Generative AI is shifting from standalone tools into embedded search and browser workflows that combine discovery, assistance and creation.
