Twitter's non-chronological timeline test extends an experimentation streak that began earlier in 2015 with TV Timelines, which collected show conversations into curated collections rather than a raw reverse-chron stream. The difference now is scope: instead of a special-purpose view, the core home timeline itself is being reordered, and early testers are pushing back hard enough that multiple outlets are covering the confusion.

The company has run this play before in miniature — the "while you were away" module already surfaced older tweets at the top of the feed — so the test reads as an attempt to expand that ranked approach from a slot at the top of the timeline to the whole thing, with an opt-out held in reserve.
