The 25,000-track ceiling had been the hard edge of Apple's scan-and-match system since before Apple Music existed, and it was already looking stale in 2015: months earlier Google Play doubled its free storage allowance to 50,000 songs, leaving iTunes Match subscribers paying $24.99 a year for half that headroom. Raising the limit to 100,000 tracks is both a catch-up move and a leapfrog.

It also lands on a service still working through reliability problems — duplicate tracks and wrong metadata showed up after users enabled iCloud Music Library in July 2015 — so every expansion of the matching pipeline widens the surface where those bugs bite.
