Raspberry Pi's latest computer costs just $5  —  Raspberry Pi has just unveiled the Pi Zero, a programmable computer that costs only $5 — about as much as a cup of coffee.

With the Pi Zero announcement, Raspberry Pi pushed its entry price down to $5 while keeping the familiar board format — 512MB of RAM and a processor roughly 40% faster than the original Raspberry Pi 1 — and made the boldest move a giveaway: the December issue of The MagPi ships with one attached.

That price point turned out to be a durable rung, not a stunt. Six years later the line reappeared as the $15 Zero 2 W with WiFi and a 64-bit CPU (Wired UK's review called it ideal for emulation and automation), and by 2024 Raspberry Pi was selling the Pi 5 at $50–$80 depending on RAM. The Zero is the top of the funnel for that ladder.

First-order effects

  • Hobbyists, classrooms, and embedded tinkerers get a programmable Linux-class computer for coffee money, and The MagPi effectively buys newsstand circulation by attaching hardware to the cover.

Second-order effects

  • Other single-board makers face a price anchor below most of their bill-of-materials floors, forcing them to compete on features like wireless or I/O rather than sticker price.

  • If the pattern holds — and the later Zero 2 W and premium-priced Pi 5 suggest it does — ultra-cheap entry boards function as customer acquisition for a tiered ecosystem, where margin lives in the higher-end models rather than the headline device.

The trend: Single-board computing is stratifying into a loss-leader-style entry tier that feeds demand for progressively pricier flagship boards from the same vendor.
