Context & Ripple Effects

The PS4 shipped without any way to play discs from older PlayStations, making backward compatibility one of the loudest gaps in its lineup. With this confirmation, Sony is answering that gap in software rather than silicon: PS2 games run through emulation instead of original hardware.

The move also sets up the catalog strategy that followed. Three years later, Sony let PlayStation Now subscribers download remastered PS2 titles alongside PS4 games (PlayStation Now adds downloadable PS2 and PS4 games), and the commitment hardened into hardware policy when Sony said the next-gen console would be backward-compatible and that nearly all PS4 games would run on PS5 at launch.

First-order effects

  • PS4 owners gain access to a two-decade-deep back catalog without buying old hardware, and Sony gains a new sales channel for PS2-era titles on current-gen storefronts.

Second-order effects

  • Emulated PS2 support gives Sony a tested pipeline to feed subscription services — the same remastered-PS2 catalog later surfaced inside PlayStation Now once downloads arrived.

Third-order effects

  • If emulation keeps carrying catalogs forward, console generations stop resetting libraries: Sony's pledge of near-universal PS4 compatibility on PS5 turns what began as a PS4 emulation feature into a standing expectation buyers will demand from every future PlayStation.

The trend: Console makers are using emulation to dissolve hard generation breaks, turning backward compatibility from a launch-afterthought into a permanent platform expectation.
