This February 2023 Wired report was an early warning shot: experts flagged that the spread of unmanned aerial vehicles was pushing militaries to delegate more decision-making to AI, a 'slippery slope' for human control of lethal force. At the time it read as a caution; the years of coverage since have turned it into a documented trajectory.

Ukraine's wartime innovation cycle — rapidly improving drone speed, range, and payload after Russia's invasion — met Russian jamming, which severed the operator-to-drone link and made machine autonomy a battlefield necessity rather than a preference. By mid-2025 the security service reported drones completing missions on pre-planned routes after losing signal deep in Russia, and by late 2025 the war had produced coordinated AI-driven drone swarms attacking Russian positions.

  • Electronic-warfare jamming forces Ukrainian operators to hand terminal navigation — and progressively targeting judgment — to onboard AI, since a remotely piloted drone that loses its link is a lost asset.
