Coinbase launches Base, a Layer 2 network using Optimism's OP Stack, offering access to Ethereum, Solana, and others, and has no plans for new network tokens
Crypto exchange Coinbase (COIN) launched Base, a layer 2 network built using Optimism's OP Stack, to attract millions of new crypto users in the coming years.

Context & Ripple Effects
Coinbase had already worked to reduce blockchain-integration friction through its open-source Rosetta framework. Base extends that infrastructure role into a network layer built on Optimism's stack, while Coinbase's decision not to add a network token keeps the initial proposition centered on access rather than a new asset.
The launch became a distribution path: Coinbase later paired Base's public opening with an Ethereum bridge, and the public mainnet arrived with more than 100 dApps and service providers. That trajectory matters because Base can connect Coinbase's consumer product surface to an on-chain ecosystem.
First-order effects
Coinbase gains a chain it can steer users and developers toward, while Optimism gains a prominent OP Stack deployment.
By ruling out a Base token, Coinbase avoids making a new network asset the primary incentive or governance mechanism for Base participants.
Second-order effects
Developers and service providers seeking Coinbase-adjacent distribution have a reason to support Base as its public launch and Ethereum bridge expand access.
Coinbase's later DEX rollout beginning with Base assets turns Base support into a route to in-app trading distribution, raising the value of ecosystem integration for on-chain venues.
Third-order effects
If Coinbase continues to route exchange-app activity through Base, crypto exchanges may increasingly compete through proprietary or closely aligned network ecosystems rather than listings and custody alone.
OP Stack adoption by a major exchange points toward modular blockchain infrastructure becoming a strategic dependency for consumer-facing crypto platforms, with network distribution concentrated in a smaller set of interfaces.
The trend: Crypto exchanges are moving from connecting users to many chains toward using aligned Layer 2 networks as their on-chain distribution layer.
4/ We've incubated Base inside @Coinbase, leveraging our last decade of experience in crypto. Seeded with Coinbase products, users, and assets, we aim to make Base an open ecosystem for everyone. Read more about why we're building Base on our blog: https://www.coinbase.com/...
0/ 🔵 Hello world. Meet Base, an Ethereum L2 that offers a secure, low-cost, developer-friendly way for anyone, anywhere, to build decentralized apps. Our goal with Base is to make onchain the next online and onboard 1B+ users into the cryptoeconomy. https://base.mirror.xyz/...
3/ Base will be: → The onchain home for @Coinbase → An open ecosystem where anyone, anywhere, can build dapps that reach the next 1B+ users → A bridge that brings our users onchain and enables them to go anywhere, including L1, other L2s, and ecosystems like Bitcoin & Solana
Incredibly bullish for decentralized crypto. The “exchange as rollup” thesis playing out before our eyes. Will accrue significant cultural & economic value to Ethereum https://twitter.com/...

Coinbase just announced that they are launching a layer 2, named Base, on Ethereum and powered by Optimism. Ethereum is becoming the world's settlement layer.
Fantastic all around. This is a game changer. L2 testnet, ready to bring web3 to 110M+ users. EVM equivalence + gasless transactions, APIs, account abstraction and native bridging. Professional RPC nodes from day one. https://twitter.com/...
