Uniswap token holders vote to deploy to Binance's BNB blockchain using the Wormhole bridge, with 66% in favor, a move a16z voted to oppose with its 15M UNI

their first vote was to deploy on Polygon. No surprise: Variant is an investor in Polygon, Aztec Network, Scroll, and Aptos. https://twitter.com/... https://twitter.com/...

Context & Ripple Effects

This closes the arc opened when a16z deployed its full 15M UNI stake against the same proposal nine days ago (voted against deploying Uniswap V3 to BNB Chain via Wormhole). The 66% approval means the largest single dissenting holder lost anyway — a direct stress test of how much weight concentrated tokens carry in Uniswap governance.

The vote also extends an established pattern: holders had already approved a Polygon deployment as their first multi-chain step, and Variant — a Uniswap-aligned firm that invests in Polygon, Aztec Network, Scroll, and Aptos — has interests across the chains Uniswap keeps expanding onto. The BNB win makes Uniswap's liquidity reachable through Binance's ecosystem, not just Ethereum-native Layer 2s.

First-order effects

  • Uniswap V3 goes live on BNB Chain through the Wormhole bridge with broad-holder backing, while a16z's 15M-token bloc is publicly overridden — its first high-profile defeat in Uniswap governance.

Second-order effects

  • Binance gains a flagship DeFi app on its own blockchain and a marketing win over rival smart-contract platforms; Wormhole secures the highest-value bridging mandate of its kind so far.
  • Investors with positions in competing chains — including Variant's stakes in Polygon, Aztec Network, Scroll, and Aptos — have added incentive to lobby for further deployments, turning each governance vote into a contest among chain ecosystems.

Third-order effects

  • If concentrated dissent can't stop popular deployments, protocol governance tilts toward whichever chain communities mobilize retail holders, weakening large VC token blocs as kingmakers.
  • The Labs side is hedging the same fragmentation problem differently: after detailing Uniswap v4 it unveiled Unichain, an Optimism-based Layer 2 — meaning the protocol may eventually route around third-party chain politics by owning its own chain.

The trend: Uniswap is becoming multichain infrastructure through token-voted deployments even as its own labs team builds proprietary chains, shifting power from VC token blocs to distributed holders.

Several @a16z delegates have voted against a16z's interests in the current $UNI poll. The results of this vote could end up costing a16z a lot of money. Why would a16z keep these delegates if they're actually costing them money & opportunity? Will be interesting to watch.

The Uniswap DAO community approved the proposal to deploy Uniswap V3 to BNB Chain. 66% vote in favor, including ConsenSys and founder of Compound Finance, voted in favor; a16z 15 million votes against. https://www.tally.xyz/...

Variant Fund joins a16z in voting ‘Against’ deploying on BNB Chain. It's only their third time voting in the Uniswap DAO—their first vote was to deploy on Polygon. No surprise: Variant is an investor in Polygon, Aztec Network, Scroll, and Aptos. https://twitter.com/... https://tw…
