Tenable Network Security raises $250M Series B led by Insight Venture Partners and Accel

Tenable raises $250 million in record cyber funding round  —  Privately held software maker Tenable Network Security Inc said on Tuesday it is raising $250 million in venture capital funding, a record-sized round for a cyber security firm.

Reuters Jim Finkle

Context & Ripple Effects

In November 2015 Tenable Network Security closed what Reuters called the largest venture round yet for a cyber security company — a $250 million Series B led by Insight Venture Partners with Accel alongside, months after the two firms had also backed Illumio's $100 million cyber growth round. The bet paid off on the fund-returning timeline VCs live by: Tenable disclosed $187.7 million of 2017 revenue, up 53% year over year, filed to go public at roughly $300 million raised, and closed its first trading day up 31.5%.

First-order effects

  • Tenable gains a war chest that lets it outspend privately held vulnerability-management rivals on product and sales while remaining independent — capital no prior cyber startup had raised in a single private round.

Second-order effects

Third-order effects

  • Security shifts from point-product vendors to platform consolidators — the same company that needed a record private round in 2015 becomes an acquirer by 2021 — while mega-rounds normalize as the entry ticket for category leaders in cyber.

The trend: Cyber security is cycling through a capital-escalation pattern where record private rounds mint the next generation of public acquirers, with Accel and Insight repeatedly recycling proceeds into successive waves.
