This closes a gap Google opened earlier the same year, when Maps gained turn-by-turn directions for downloaded offline areas — useful, but you still couldn't search for a destination without a connection. Extending offline to search turns a downloaded map file into something approaching the full product, aimed squarely at the roughly 60 percent of the world Google says lacks Internet access.

The cadence that follows confirms this wasn't a one-off: Maps later added a Wi-Fi-only mode with an SD card download option, and by early 2017 the main Google app was queueing offline searches to run once a connection returns — offline behavior becoming a design constraint across Google's mobile stack rather than a Maps feature flag.
