Sources: Instagram is testing ads that use 3D Touch and Apple Pay

Instagram's testing new ads that drive sales  —  Instagram doesn't want to be just a platform for pretty brand photos.  It wants to prove it can drive sales, developing new ads that showcase a variety of product offerings …

Context & Ripple Effects

Instagram spent the fall of 2015 building out its ad stack — 30-second commercials, the premium Marquee format, and a global rollout — but those were still brand-awareness products. The 3D Touch and Apple Pay tests mark the pivot from selling reach to proving direct sales: ads that let iPhone users hard-press into a product view and check out without leaving the app.

That matters because Facebook's business model for Instagram depends on demonstrating purchase intent, not just eyeballs. The arc runs through shoppable photo tags with 20 US brands in late 2016, the personalized shopping channel and Stories tags in 2018, and by 2019 reports of Facebook pushing ad load to double year over year.

First-order effects

  • Brands advertising on Instagram get a native checkout path on iOS — Apple Pay inside an ad unit removes the browser redirect where most mobile purchase intent leaks away.
  • Apple gains a new distribution surface: every tested ad is also a placement for its payment rails and 3D Touch hardware feature.

Second-order effects

  • Rival platforms with commerce ambitions are forced to match one-tap checkout or concede the performance-ad budget; the metric brands buy against shifts from impressions toward completed purchases.
  • Payment providers outside Apple's ecosystem lose the default position at mobile checkout as social apps embed wallets directly in the feed.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, social feeds consolidate into storefronts — the line between media platform and retail channel dissolves, and platforms that own both the audience and the payment step capture margin that previously went to retailers' e-commerce stacks.
  • Deeper hardware-level integration like 3D Touch also deepens platform dependence on Apple's iOS decisions, a structural tension that recurs as regulators scrutinize app-store and payments control.

The trend: Social advertising is moving from brand awareness toward closed-loop commerce, with platforms embedding identity, product catalog, and payment directly into the ad unit.
