Twitter cuts off API access to Movetodon, a useful tool for finding and following one's Twitter followers on Mastodon; it's unclear if the tool broke any rule

According to twitter, the app “has violated Twitter Rules and policies”. … Arie Goldshlager / @ariegoldshlager@mstdn.social : @Tibor  —  It was very useful while it lasted.  Thank you for creating it.  —  Twitter is probably trying to shut one of the #TwitterMigration barn doors after numerous horses have bolted...  #twitterexodus Craig Hockenberry / @chockenberry@mastodon.social : @Tibor It has been three weeks since I submitted that form for our suspension.  Don't expect a response or any other information from Twitter. Paul Haddad / @paul@tapbots.social : @Tibor still waiting for our email. Tibor Martini / @Tibor@mastodon.social : I try to get more information from Twitter, but they already mentioned that it may take a few days to get back to me. Mike Masnick / @mmasnick@mastodon.social : I wrote up something quick on Musk shutting down Movetodon... and also why people should set up a Mastodon account soon before Musk shuts off other similar tools.  Feel free to share it to friends still sticking to the bird site. https://www.techdirt.com/... Tweets: Elon Musk / @elonmusk : @PepitoTheCat ... Responding to feedback, Twitter will enable a light, write-only API for bots providing good content that is free Dr. Robert Rohde / @rarohde : That's literally the exact opposite of what academics and social media researchers would want. Analyzing twitter activity patterns is a read-only process. https://twitter.com/... Steven Monacelli / @stevanzetti : Hanlon's Razor is a useful tool but it ultimately fails if the person you're dealing with is equally stupid and malicious https://twitter.com/... @schock : If you haven't 1. set up your masto account and 2. used debirdify to find your Twitter folks there, you should do so right now, today. Musk has started shutting down the tools that make it easier to migrate. https://t.co/... Larry Ferlazzo / @larryferlazzo : The end of Twitter's free API will leave the site a less fun, interesting place. https://slate.com/... Dan York / @danyork : So it would appear Mr Musk is rather concerned about the number of people leaving for #Mastodon as part of the #TwitterMigration ... https://twitter.com/... Brett Glass / @brettglass : Already used it in preparation for this platform's eventual descent into uselessness. https://www.techmeme.com/... Chris Saad / @chrissaad : @Techmeme ... tip we Interviewed @ashevat about this debacle on The Startup Podcast. Such a tragic waste of potential https://open.spotify.com/... David Bisset / @dimensionmedia : If you were going to use https://movetodon.org/ to find those you follow here over at #Mastodon, looks like Twitter has cut off the API early according to it's creator. https://mastodon.social/... So instead of next week, Twitter seems to be cutting off API access now w/o notice. https://twitter.com/...

Context & Ripple Effects

Movetodon’s cutoff follows Twitter’s unexplained breakage of major third-party clients and a subsequent developer-agreement change barring those clients. The service is now also preparing to end free API access in favor of a paid tier, making the block part of a broader tightening of developer access rather than an isolated outage.

Movetodon served a distinct migration use case: helping Twitter users locate people they already follow on Mastodon. Twitter’s unsupported assertion that it violated policy removes that bridge without giving its developer a clear compliance path.

First-order effects

  • Movetodon loses the API access required to match and follow Twitter contacts on Mastodon, interrupting a tool used by people moving between the services.
  • Twitter developers now face another enforcement action with no stated rule violation, alongside the planned end of free API access.

Second-order effects

  • Tools that depend on Twitter’s social graph—including migration and third-party client services—must treat access as both paid and subject to policy removal, raising the cost and uncertainty of building around Twitter.
  • Mastodon’s ability to capture users leaving Twitter is less supported by automated contact discovery when Twitter can block the services that provide it.

Third-order effects

  • Twitter’s developer ecosystem is moving from broadly usable interfaces toward operator-controlled access, where product categories can be excluded through terms or enforcement rather than technical limits alone.
  • If that pattern persists, cross-network portability will depend less on independent bridge tools and more on platforms’ willingness to expose user-relationship data.

The trend: Twitter is tightening control over API access and third-party interoperability, limiting the independent tools that once extended its social graph.

So you may have noticed that the Twitter login of https://movetodon.org/ is not working at the moment.  —  According to twitter, the app “has violated Twitter Rules and policies”. …
