The shutdown ends an eighteen-month retreat that began when HP admitted its public cloud lacked profitability and scale ([[a:828122]]), wobbled through Bill Hilf's walk-back of his own 'it makes no sense to compete' remark and a reaffirmed OpenStack commitment ([[a:828266]]), and saw Marten Mickos cede key responsibilities in a February reorg ([[a:826721]]). The January 31, 2016 date makes official what April's messaging already implied: HP cannot sustain a me-too infrastructure service against AWS.
