Amazon launches Handmade, an Etsy rival for handcrafted goods with over 80K items from 60 countries

Amazon Challenges Etsy With Strictly Handmade Marketplace  —  Amazon stepped into the handcrafted-goods ring on Thursday, opening an arts-and-crafts bazaar online that squarely takes aim …

New York Times Hiroko Tabuchi

Context & Ripple Effects

Amazon's Handmade launch is the payoff of a courtship that began months earlier, when it sent out direct invitations to Etsy sellers for the new marketplace — recruiting incumbents' own merchants rather than waiting for them to defect. The move lands just as Etsy has been shoring up its buyer experience, including a fall test of same-day and next-day delivery with Postmates in parts of New York City.

The competitive logic cuts both ways: Etsy had already answered by broadening beyond finished goods, announcing Etsy Studio, an 8M-product craft-supplies marketplace, while Amazon would later extend Handmade into Etsy's wedding market. The long arc matters too — a 2020 retrospective found sellers describing Handmade as operating like the rest of Amazon with little differentiation.

First-order effects

  • Etsy sellers gain a second storefront with Amazon's traffic behind it — many were invited directly — splitting their inventory, loyalty, and fulfillment decisions between two platforms overnight.
  • Amazon immediately fields a curated arts-and-crafts bazaar of over 80K items from 60 countries, putting it head-to-head with Etsy's core handcrafted-goods catalog.

Second-order effects

  • Etsy is pushed to compete on breadth rather than curation alone — its Etsy Studio supplies push and its Postmates speed-delivery pilot are responses to a rival that can undercut on logistics and scale.
  • Vertical expansion follows the beachhead: Amazon's later wedding shop takes Handmade into one of Etsy's highest-margin occasions, forcing Etsy to defend niches it previously owned unchallenged.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, 'handmade' becomes a category that large horizontal platforms absorb rather than one that sustains standalone marketplaces — though the 2020 seller view that Handmade lacked differentiation suggests curation-led identity is harder to replicate than selection or shipping.
  • Seller economics shift structurally as artisans run multi-platform operations, weakening any single marketplace's claim on their loyalty and pricing power.

The trend: Large horizontal commerce platforms are absorbing curated vertical marketplaces, testing whether scale-driven convenience can displace community- and curation-driven incumbents like Etsy.
