A scoop from me: Getty Images is suing Stability AI, creators of Stable Diffusion. The stock photo site claims Stable Diffusion “unlawfully copied and processed millions of images protected by copyright” and has “commenced legal proceedings” in London https://www.theverge.com/...

This is in its early stages — the full suit isn't public and Stability AI told me they haven't received it yet (will update when they do) — but it's a big escalation in terms of the copyright debate over generative AI models.

Worth noting Getty is targeting Stability AI, not other big players like OpenAI. One reason: we *know* there are Getty images in SD's training data ( https://waxy.org/...), whereas OAI doesn't disclose. though this is obvious from SD's tendency to recreate Getty's watermark... ht…

Another shoe drops in the fight to end the unauthorized taking of artists' work to build AI regenerative art models. There will be some that argue it's too late & others arguing it's too early. I'll just observe that it's about time to bend the arc of history towards justice. htt…

Getty Images CEO Craig Peters compares the situation to the early days of digital music. In this framing Stable Diffusion is Napster: popular but illegal. Peters says he doesn't want money but new status quo (presumably one with favorable licensing terms) https://theverge.com/...…

it's so perfect that this is being framed *by getty's ceo* as being analogous to the napster lawsuits, with image-synth spotify being the desired outcome. tells you everything you need to know about what the stakes are here, and which side is which https://twitter.com/...

2/ I am proud to be one of the plaintiffs named for this class action suit. I am proud to do this with fellow peers, that we'll give a voice to potentially thousands of affected artists. I'm proud that now we fight for our rights not just in the public sphere but in the courts!

Can we just take a bit of time to fully dismantle this argument? It's a straw-man. Emad tries to justify violating the consent of artists and creators worldwide by virtue signalling. It's concealing the fact that making open/ custom/ personal AI is possible without violation. htt…

Putting aside $$s for a moment is there anyone who would rather have the next generation using closed, centralised, corporate-aligned AI versus open, customised and personally-aligned AI? It's a choice we can make right now at the start of this crazy takeoff 🛫 🚀 🌟

Looks to me like that class action against stable diffusion, midjourney and others is showing a blatant misunderstanding of their inner workings. If anyone they would either have to sue OpenAI for CLIP or LAION since those are the 3rd party components trained on the actual data.
