Cellular usage through the roof since installing iOS 9?  Wi-Fi Assist may be to blame

If you've noticed that your data usage has skyrocketed since installing iOS 9 then this may be a feature rather than a bug.  A lesser-known feature of the update called Wi-Fi Assist may be to blame.

iOS 9 arrived into an installed base that upgrades fast — the same dynamic that pushed iOS 8.4 to 40% of all iOS usage within a week means a default-on setting reaches hundreds of millions of devices almost immediately. Wi-Fi Assist, which silently hands traffic from weak Wi-Fi to the cellular radio, was easy to miss in the release notes.

It also lands on top of an existing data-consumption problem: Facebook's iOS app was already draining data and battery in the background even with Background App Refresh off, so users auditing their bills after the update are stacking a system-level switcher on top of leaky apps.
