Days after researchers put the dark web drug economy at more than $100M a year and argued the ecosystem was getting more resilient to crackdowns (the $100M-a-year dark web study), one of its biggest marketplaces went dark voluntarily. Agora's pause is precaution, not seizure: a Tor bug that could leak the real IP addresses of hidden-service servers would hand law enforcement the de-anonymization it normally has to work for.

  • Agora's buyers and vendors are locked out of live listings and escrowed funds during the pause — an operator-chosen outage rather than a police raid.
