Blockfeed's approach is mechanical where most local-news products are editorial: instead of asking publishers to tag stories or users to check in, it scrapes location out of the article text itself and matches it to wherever the reader is standing. That makes it an early, infrastructure-level answer to a problem the big platforms later attacked head-on — Facebook's Today In tests across six US cities paired human curation with AI to surface nearby news and events, and Flipboard scaled the same idea from 23 cities on IP-based recommendations to more than 1,000 cities and towns.

Read against that later arc, Blockfeed matters less as a product than as proof that location can be extracted from content rather than supplied by users or platforms — the same premise TikTok eventually formalized with its opt-in Local Feed tying travel, news, events, shopping, and dining content to a user's current position.
