This 2015 Motherboard study is an early entry in what became a recurring finding: what each side of Uber's app displays is a managed output, not a window onto ground truth. The reported cause here is benign-sounding — supply forecasting smears driver positions — but it establishes that rider-facing maps are approximations Uber controls.

The pattern hardened over the following years: sources described a program to identify enforcement officers and stealthily deny them rides before regulators could hail cars, and by 2018 Uber announced a pilot obscuring pickup and drop-off logs from drivers, showing only general areas instead. The passenger-side fuzziness documented here is the mirror image of those moves — same design instinct, aimed at the other side of the marketplace.
