T-Mobile is the first major US carrier to switch on Rich Communication Services features in native texting — read receipts, real-time chat, large file support — bringing Android users closer to what over-the-top apps already offer inside the default Messages app. The move matters because it gives RCS its first big-carrier beachhead in the US.

Google builds directly on that opening: it partners with global and regional carriers in 2016 to push RCS through a new Android RCS messaging client, then in 2017 rebrands Messenger as Android Messages and makes it the default on phones from LG, ZTE and others, before rolling RCS out to all US Android Messages users by late 2019.
