This closes the loop on Google's mid-2015 push to make Compute Engine credible for mainstream enterprise workloads: weeks after Windows Server went GA, Google shipped general-availability Autoscaler and 32-core VM instances, turning an experimental IaaS into something sized for production fleets.

Windows was the missing piece for enterprises whose legacy apps can't run on Linux-only clouds — and it set up the platform layer that followed, from Container Engine reaching general availability a month later to, four years on, Windows Server Containers inside Kubernetes Engine.
