The resolution bump lands weeks after Instagram's redesigned website with bigger photos — the site could render larger images, but the stored files were still capped at the legacy 640x640 ceiling. Moving storage to 1080x1080 closes that gap and sets up a user-facing upgrade without a second migration.

It also puts Instagram ahead of where rivals stood at the time: Twitter didn't ship full-resolution uploads until years later, when it rolled out 4K image support across iOS and Android in April 2021 after months of testing large-image display.
