SmartBar lands at a moment when touch is migrating off the glass and onto every other input surface. Weeks earlier, Wired argued that Apple's haptic trackpad pointed toward interfaces we feel rather than just see, and Synaptics — already the incumbent supplier of laptop touchpads and keyboards — is answering by making the most fixed key on the keyboard programmable.

The move also fits a clear Synaptics pattern across this coverage: within months the company announced ClearForce pressure-sensing for smartphone screens, then fingerprint sensors that detect force and gestures. SmartBar extends that same sensing portfolio into the one part of the laptop nobody had touched.
