App Annie buys app data provider Mobidia to combine app download and usage analytics in 60 countries

Data Vendor App Annie Buys Mobidia, Looking to Grow, Stay Independent  —  Mobile analytics company App Annie said Wednesday it is buying Vancouver-based app data provider Mobidia in a cash and stock deal.

Re/code Ina Fried

Context & Ripple Effects

This deal lands just four months after App Annie's $55M Series D round and its first usage-tracking product, which put it on a collision course with Mobidia's core business of measuring what people actually do inside apps rather than how often apps are downloaded. Buying the Vancouver firm in cash and stock closes that gap in one move: one vendor now sells download and engagement data together across 60 countries.

The acquisition is also the opening chapter of an accumulation strategy the corpus lets us trace directly: an $63M Series E ten months later, the AppScotch marketing-data buy in March 2016, and eventually the 2021 exploration of going public before the company rebranded as Data.ai and partnered with Similarweb. Mobidia is where the build-the-independent-dataset playbook started.

First-order effects

  • App Annie's customers can now buy download counts and real-world usage measurement from a single vendor across 60 countries instead of stitching two providers together — and Mobidia's Vancouver team and panel come under App Annie ownership in a cash-and-stock structure.

Second-order effects

  • Rival app-analytics vendors must respond by bundling their own engagement panels with store-download estimates, since a combined dataset resets buyer expectations for what a subscription should include; Mobidia's exit also thins the pool of independent usage-data sources advertisers can license separately.

Third-order effects

  • The pattern here — fund a product, acquire the adjacent dataset, raise again — points toward app-market intelligence consolidating around a few scaled independents whose data becomes infrastructure for advertisers and investors, a path the corpus shows running through AppScotch to the Data.ai era; whether independence survives contact with platform-owned data is the open question the later coverage leaves unresolved.

The trend: As mobile attention overtakes desktop, app-market data is consolidating into independent vendors that fuse store download figures with panel-based usage measurement — App Annie's Mobidia buy being an early, formative instance.
